Social ‘behaviour change’ marketing has been widely adopted by the healthcare sector that’s for sure, but that’s just part of the story. Social marketing is now being used across different industries and the results are in – it has much to offer.
Social marketing has been effective in tackling healthcare inequality across the board
It’s true, there are many brilliant examples of NHS health intervention projects and campaigns posted on the internet. These campaigns have tackled health behaviours at grass roots level, leading to lifestyle and health improvements across the population.
From obesity campaigns UK, awareness of healthy eating, the dangers of consuming excessive drugs and alcohol, to the importance of taking regular exercise, behaviour marketing as part of a social marketing strategy, can make a real difference to the quality of people’s lives and health.
But what else can it do?
There is a growing consensus across many different industries that social marketing has much more to give. Positively tackling a wide range of issues and concerns across society, in some troubled communities
Take the sports sector, for example, sports foundations, clubs and societies have used behaviour change marketing techniques to present sports participation and activities, as a viable and more healthy alternative to getting into trouble with the police, providing respite from difficult home circumstances, and, in some cases, encouraging youngsters to get involved in sport to increase their life chances and skills.
But it’s not just the sports sector either, the education sector like schools, colleges, education bodies are using social marketing campaigns to promote opportunities, awareness and availability of support networks, like online help with revision techniques etc, to help young people get on in life, and to make the most of their education.
Not just for health interventions
Social marketing is by no means a one-trick pony – its appeal, abilities, track record and affordability, make it an extremely viable technique in terms of influencing the way people, groups and communities behave.
