5 ways football foundations are raising aspirations in young people

Young people are difficult to impress at the best of times!  But football clubs (from the premier league and other leagues) are in the unique position of being able to raise aspirations and tackle some deep-rooted social issues, because young people are so passionate about the game.

Football Foundations are leading the way

Using the principles of social marketing to deliver a range of highly successful education, motivational, skills-related, integration and behavioural programmes, there are many clubs across the premier league that actively give back to their communities.

So which clubs are using social marketing campaigns?

Sunderland FC Foundation Of Light

Sunderland’s Foundation of Light, which is using the power of football to help the prospects of young people on Wearside.

The charity, which is supported by the Premier League, uses education on behaviour and attitude, parenting classes, as well as sport and enterprise sessions to address the challenges faced in local communities.

Liverpool FC Foundation

The Foundation has invested in a range of social marketing education programmes aimed at young people and improving their life chances.  One of these is the Employability Scheme, designed to encourage local youngsters to aim high when it comes to work and learning.

Another example of a recent LFC social marketing initiative was a programme designed to improve awareness of the benefits of immunisation in third-world countries, among teenage boys.

Manchester United Football Foundation

The Foundation has been involved with various social marketing campaigns over the years.  One of their most recent projects involved raising the aspirations and healthy living among inner-city boys.

Oxford United Football Club

Oxford United in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council has fronted a series of social marketing interventions design to raise awareness in young people about the dangers of taking, so called ‘legal highs’.

Chelsea Football Foundation

Through their Building Bridges social marketing campaign, Chelsea FC’s programme promotes equality, celebrates diversity and makes everyone feel valued throughout the club, stadium and wider community.
